Start doing this and you'll finish anything you start from THE WAR OF ART by Steven Pressfield
I just finished reading what, in my opinion, is an essential book for everyone. Here’s why:
The book is a cold kick in the face, exposing all your excuses and making them incapable of hiding. It may mess you up positively. Let’s get into my highlights.
“The working artist will not tolerate trouble in her life because she knows trouble prevents her from doing her work. The working artist banishes from her world all sources of trouble. She harnesses the urge for trouble and transforms it into work.”
A lot of times, people who consistently attract trouble into their lives do so as a conscious and unconscious way to draw attention to themselves so they won’t focus on their work, business, and life. Because then, the trouble becomes a perfect and acceptable excuse not to make the sales call, write the book, send the proposal, and so on.
Are you courting trouble or avoiding stupidity? Why are you still texting your ex? Hmm, so they will give you a great sexual experience, then leave you again. Then you get sad, and you won’t work because you’re depressed.
“Grandiose fantasies are a symptom of Resistance. They're the sign of an amateur. The professional has learned that success, like happiness, comes as a by-product of work. The professional concentrates on the work and allows rewards to come or not come, whatever they like.”
Don’t focus on the OUTCOME GOAL (the car, the banging hot body, the success, etc.). Focus and concentrate on the PROCESS GOAL (the daily sales call, daily email sent, daily content creation for your business, daily being kind to your spouse). If you do the daily, the EVENTUAL will take care of itself. After all, the outcome is a creature or creation of your daily actions.
“Why? Because if Resistance lets us see clearly that our own fear is preventing us from doing our work, we may feel shame at this. And shame may drive us to act in the face of fear. Resistance doesn't want us to do this. So it brings in Rationalization. Rationalization is Resistance's spin doctor. It's Resistance's way of hiding the Big Stick behind its back. Instead of showing us our fear (which might shame us and impel us to do our work), Resistance presents us with a series of plausible, rational justifications for why we shouldn't do our work. What's particularly insidious about the rationalizations that Resistance presents to us is that a lot of them are true.”
Some people have rationalized themselves to a life without impact. The sad thing about our excuses is that they’re valid. Yes, you have kids and a spouse, so you don’t have time to chase your dreams or hit the gym. Yet Leo Tolstoy had 13 children when he wrote the 1,000+ page book "War and Peace."
“Someone once asked Somerset Maugham if he wrote on a schedule or only when struck by inspiration. "I write only when inspiration strikes," he replied. "Fortunately, it strikes every morning at nine o'clock sharp." That's a pro. In terms of Resistance, Maugham was saying, "I despise Resistance; I will not let it faze me; I will sit down and do my work." Maugham reckoned another, deeper truth: that by performing the mundane physical act of sitting down and starting to work, he set in motion a mysterious but infallible sequence of events that would produce inspiration, as surely as if the goddess had synchronized her watch with his.”
Wow! What a book! The book is so good I am reviewing it with members of my WhatsApp group on June 15. Join us here… Join Sales Factory
I have written 300+ articles in this newsletter you’re reading. I don’t wait for inspiration; I sit each week and let inspiration meet me.
If you wait for inspiration, you won’t act. DO THE WORK. The time is always right to do what is right.
“Resistance hates two qualities above all others: concentration and depth. Why? Because when we work with focus and we work deep, we succeed.”
You’re chasing your shadows instead of DOING THE WORK when:
1. You scroll instead of posting your products
2. You watch tv instead of making content and contact with new clients
3. You gist with a gossiper when you know you should be working on your own dreams
4.You go back to the EX that doesn’t respect you and deeply love you because of the sex instead of chasing your greatness and eventually attracting true love
You are running away from yourself, you are chasing your shadows instead the substance
What a book!
