Paul is the founder of Y Combinator, a tech incubator, and funding company. They’re behind companies like Flutterwave a Nigerian payment company worth $3 Billion.

The above quote is a very powerful mental model for business, having the mentality that clients will not walk to your online or offline business to buy from you, you’ve got to cultivate the mindset of going out and hunting for people that can pay for your products and services. If you don’t hunt, you won’t eat.

Closed sales and cash in your company account is a measurement of how many people you’re helping solve problems. If you’re not making sales, you’re selfish and unknown.

UTILITY VALUE

Force your business to solve a human problem for a fee. The number of fees you collect is an indication of the number of lives you’ve helped. If the power company collects fees from 1,000 homes, that means they’ve helped 1,000 homes have power for food, gas, etc.

NIKE

Nike is a sports shoe company co-founded by Phil Knight in April 1964. Here is what he said in his book

“My sales strategy was simple and I thought rather brilliant. I drove all over the Pacific Northwest, to various track meets. Between races, I’d chat up the coaches, the runners, and the fans and show them my wares. The response was always the same. I couldn’t write orders fast enough”

Notice he didn’t wait for his customers to come to him, he went to them. Today NIKE is worth $211.13 Billion

EARN YOUR STRIPE

Stripe is a payment platform that makes most of the payments on the internet happen. Stripe owns the Nigerian payment company Paystack. The market value of Stripe is over $30 Billion. Paul Graham said when the founders of stripe were in YC or Y Combinator they’ll move around town telling people about their product and sign them up immediately before they grew this big

If Nike and Stripe went out to get clients without waiting for the clients to come to them, then it is a PRINCIPLE that has worked and will work. Jesus said “GO INTO THE WORLD AND MAKE DISCIPLES OF MEN” He didn’t say, stay at home and let men come to you.
