The Surprising Benefits of Questioning Your Thoughts Instead of Accepting Them as Fact
3 thinking patterns that may be holding you back that you're unaware of and how to overcome them
The images that your thoughts create can evoke emotions, which can influence how you act. William Shakespeare's quote "There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so" is a perfect example of how thoughts can shape your reality.
Have you ever experienced a situation where your perception of someone was entirely different from the reality? There are different phases to every situation, including what you anticipate beforehand, what you think during, and what you reflect on after.
However, questioning your assumptions and beliefs can be a game changer. You could ask yourself things like what evidence there is to support or go against your belief, what the best or worst thing that could happen is, or if you've encountered similar situations before. By doing so, you can weaken the hold of negative beliefs and reduce their influence over you.
QUESTION YOUR BELIEFS
What if you question your assumptions and beliefs? Like
What evidence do i have to support this belief
What evidence do i have to against the belief that i can’t sell
What would you say to someone else thinking in this manner
Have i ever sold anything before
What is the worst thing that could possible happen
What is the best thing that could possibly happen
Questioning a negative belief weakens its hold and influence over you.
3 BIASES THAT MAY BE HOLDING YOU BACK
Over-generalizing
Labelling
Discounting the positive
First up, over-generalizing. This thinking pattern assumes that just because something happened once, it will always happen. But just because you lost one sale doesn't mean you're going to lose all your sales this month. Don't let one setback keep you from reaching your goals.
Next, labelling. We all know the power of words, and when you attach a negative label to yourself or someone else because of a past situation, it can hold you back from success. But here's the good news: you can adjust those labels upwards or downwards. Choose positive labels that will propel you towards your goals.
Finally, discounting the positive. This is when you reframe good things as if they don't count. Don't fall into this trap! Celebrate your successes, no matter how small. They all add up to big wins in the end.
Remember, your thoughts play a big role in affecting how you feel, and how you feel determines your actions. So keep those biases in check, stay positive, and go out there and crush your sales goals!
