Back in the late 90s
1984 to be Exact
Two friends decided to start a company
Their names were ; Mike Lazaridis and Douglas Fragan.
Their company was called : Research in Motion.
But here's where the story gets interesting.
In 2002, this company (Research in motion) unveiled their first cell phone.
That cell phone went on to sell more than 50 million units at its peak. At the time, it was regarded as the King of smartphones.
This phone was a status symbol , just like the iPhone of today, if you had it then you were either wealthy or powerful, or you could have stolen it.
Just to make sure you understand the calibre of this cell phone. At the time, it controlled 43% of the smartphone market and a solid 20% globally .
In layman terms this phone was a masterpiece. By 2007 , the research in motion company pulled in more than 3 billion dollars in revenue.
What makes this phone even special was the fact that they had a messaging platform exclusive to the users of the phone– that singular feature of this phone , made people nickname it as – The Crack berry (Crack as in Drugs).
This phone was responsible for the popular messaging platform we all know as BBM ( Black Berry Messenger) . With that , I'm sure you already know the phone I have been describing.
The blackberry phone takes your mind back right.
When you would be typing to your friends on BBM.
You can literally remember their small keyboards
The black controller at the centre of the phone, and how your fingers would roll on that black controller.
People found their place in society because they had a blackberry. it was either you were using a blackberry or you didn't have a phone
There were no exceptions.
And you would think that for a phone that was literally the people's favourite, it would never stop production.
Well as at January 2022
That's exactly what happened. They stopped making phones.
They shut down
And why they did that comes down to just 3 words
Adapt or Die
And blackberry unfortunately chose the latter.
Of course ,this wasn't a deliberate choice, they just failed to catch up to one thing, which is the core reason for today's article.
The only way to survive in business is to ADAPT as fast as possible.
Blackberry lost the smartphone market because they didn't adopt the touch - screen technology into their phones
That decision signaled the death of the company.
