It’s 7:15 a.m. on Sunday morning, November 24, 2024, as I write. My family is soundly asleep, and I am downstairs in my library/office. The only sound I can hear is the dryer drying my gym clothes.
I will go to the gym after I write you this important letter. Let’s get to it.
Marketing is Fundamentally About Awareness
If you examine the customer journey, the first step is attention. Following attention, there is conversation or engagement. After engagement comes purchase, then delivery, followed by advocacy, and ultimately, referrals. But it all begins with awareness.
Marketing is ATTENTION!
So, what are the seven laws of marketing?
1. Establish Your Funnel
This is the first law of marketing.
What is a funnel? A funnel is the route or path a customer must take to buy your product or service. It could be as simple as what I’m doing right now: conducting an Instagram Live. After the session, I encourage you to click the link in my bio. From there, you can book a call, and after that, you can close a sale. That’s a simple funnel.
I used this funnel to build my paid whatsapp group for 4 years (I was going live on IG 5 times a week). Money from my paid whatsapp group have contributed enormously to every property i have bought around the world. So it works

You might have more complex funnels, such as hosting a webinar where attendees are invited to book a call afterward, leading to a sale.
Examine every part of your funnel and ask yourself: How can I improve it? Each component leads to the next. For example, this Instagram Live session is the starting point of my funnel. If you enjoy what you hear, you’ll click the link in my bio, which leads to a sales page. If the sales page resonates, you’ll make a purchase.
The better each part of your funnel works, the more successful you’ll be. Did you get that? If yes, say, “Yes, I got that!”
2. Repel More People Than You Attract
Not everyone can be your customer, and that’s okay. Normalize repelling people instead of trying to attract everyone.
How do you do that? Through headlines and captions. For instance, a headline like “5 Things to Eat If You’re Pregnant for 5 Months or More” is a great repellent. If you’re not a woman or less than five months pregnant, that headline tells you it’s not for you.
Great marketing is polarizing. It makes people say, “This isn’t for me” or “This is exactly what I need!” You can’t be everything to everyone. Focus on attracting the right people and repelling the rest. Hmmmmm
3. Create Urgency and Scarcity
Never give the impression that people can buy your product or service anytime they want. Human beings respond to FOMO (Fear of Missing Out).
For example, include a timer in your sales pages or mention that you only have five slots left. Scarcity and urgency compel people to act immediately. Without it, many won’t take action.
4. Follow Up Religiously
This is crucial. Many of you spend money on ads or time creating content but fail to follow up. By not following up, you leave a lot of money on the table.
For example, if you conduct a webinar, the real work begins afterward. Most conversions happen during the follow-up phase, not during the event itself.
I put out a piece of content on Instagram last week, and someone commented, i followed up on the person in the DM and the person paid N100,000 to attend my next 5-day make sales challenge webinar which also qualifies him to be in my paid whatsapp group for 1 year FREE. See evidence below
Here’s an opportunity for you to practice follow-up:

5. Create Top-of-Funnel Content
Top-of-funnel content educates your audience and attracts potential buyers. It’s not direct sales content but valuable information relevant to your niche.
For instance, if you’re in real estate, create content about the costs of building a house, soil quality, or the number of bags of cement needed for construction. This kind of content builds trust and keeps you top-of-mind.
When your audience eventually needs your product or service, they’ll think of you first because you’ve already provided value.
6. Change the Bait, Change the Customer
If you’re not making sales, the issue may not be your audience—it’s your bait. The bait you present determines the kind of audience you attract.
For instance, if a woman constantly posts bikini pictures on Instagram, she’ll attract a specific kind of attention. Similarly, your headlines, captions, and overall content signal to your audience whether they should engage with you.
Consider this session titled “7 Marketing Laws for Business Owners.” The title itself filters out anyone who isn’t a business owner. Your bait determines your results.
7. Repetition is Persuasion
Repetition is critical in marketing. Customers don’t grasp your message after hearing it once. They need to see or hear it multiple times—7, 10, even 15 times—before they’re ready to buy.
This is why you must repeat your message consistently. The more you repeat it, the more persuasive it becomes.
