How to read with Ai
I Love Books
I buy them, read them, collect them, and sell them. With the rise of AI (Artificial Intelligence), the process and joy of reading have become even more engaging. Here’s how I use AI to enhance my reading experience:
How I Use AI to Read
1. Summaries Before You Buy
If you're considering buying a book but want a quick overview, AI can help. For example, you can open ChatGPT and type, “Please summarize Paul Foh’s book, 15 Simple Ways to Sell Anything to Anyone, in 200 words.” AI will generate a concise summary for you. After reading it, you'll have a clearer idea of whether the book is right for you before making a purchase.
2. Find Similar Books
Loved a book and want more like it? AI can recommend similar reads. Let’s say you enjoyed The Escape Artist by Jonathan Freedland. You can ask, “I liked The Escape Artist—can you recommend 5 other similar books?” This not only deepens your understanding of the subject but also broadens your knowledge.
3. Apply What You Read
One of my favorite ways to use AI is by applying lessons from books in practical ways. After my sons and I finished reading Proverbs 3, I asked them to use this prompt in ChatGPT: “I’m a 15-year-old football player. What lessons from Proverbs 3 can I apply to my game as a goalkeeper?” The insights were incredible! You can adapt this approach to your own life. For instance, “I’m a product manager at an edtech company with 7 direct reports. How can I apply Proverbs 3 to my work?”
4. Voice Integration for Real-Time Insights
Good news! ChatGPT now has a voice command feature in the app. While reading, if you come across a line that resonates with you, you can read it aloud to ChatGPT and ask for further explanation. For example, if a quote catches your attention, you can ask the AI to break it down and provide deeper insights.

5. Discover Authors Behind Authors
If you’re like me, once an author captivates you, you often want to know who inspired them. You can ask ChatGPT, “I love the books of XYZ author—who are the authors that inspired them?” This can open up a whole new world of reading possibilities and give you insight into the creative lineage of your favorite writers.
Some Truths About Buying Books
Buy the book when you need it – Don’t let it sit on your shelf unread.
Start with short and simple books – It builds momentum.
Take notes while you read – I use the Readwise app to capture key points.
Revisit your notes – Reinforce what you’ve learned.
