How to read and remember what you read
"All of it. Books are life’s cheat codes" Tobi Lutke CEO of Shopify a $60 Billion E-commerce company
Would you like to know how to win the competition by getting the codes? Accelerate your business? Or increase your life quality? Aggressively embrace reading.
Do not admire the successful, seek the books or pieces of knowledge that shaped their lives in other words find out their cheat codes.
"I have read Barron's Magazine for 50 years. In 50 years, I found one investment opportunity in Barron's Magazine. Out of which I made $80 million with almost no risk. I took that $80 million and gave it to Lee Lou Lou, an investor who turned that $80 million into $500 million." Charlie Munger 99 year old Billionaire Co-Founder of Berkshire Hathaway
The upsides to reading are unlimited. I believe there are no downsides to reading if you're reading the right books. Some may argue that the cost of the book and the time devoted to reading the book is part of the downside, but it cannot be compared to the upsides.
WHAT DETERMINES WHAT YOU SHOULD READ?
The gaps in your life and business should determine the books you read, podcasts you listen to, and YouTube videos you watch.
Which areas of your business are you dropping the ball on? Let’s say your sales are not looking stellar, the next question will be which aspect of sales are you struggling with? Is it
Getting leads
Closing the acquired leads
Nurturing acquired leads
Creating content
What is the problem? When you identify the issue, you should start looking for books or chapters of books that address your problem.
THE NUMBER OF BOOKS YOU HAVE FINISHED IS A VANITY METRIC
You don’t have to finish a book! I have not read the Bible from cover to cover, but I can say that it has radically shaped and changed my worldview, and improved the quality of my life and relationships.
Am I saying it is wrong to finish a book, NO? I read a lot of books, but I don't finish all the books because I read chapters or sections that address my GAPS. Release your soul of the burden and social status guilt of unfinished books
HOW TO RETAIN WHAT YOU READ
There are two primary ways to retain and integrate what you learn from a book: taking notes, teaching the concept, and implementing action. What’s the point of reading when you’re not acting on it?
HOW DO I RETAIN WHAT I READ
I use an app called NOTION to take notes. On the app, I save quotes, words, and lessons from books. I will share links to my Notion notes (See picture of my notes below) with anyone of you that join my SALES FACTORY WHATSAPP GROUP for N5,000 or $6 monthly in 48 hours. As soon as I learn something new, I immediately apply it to my life and business (such as this newsletter you're reading, which I have consistently utilized for 1 month and two years).
I listen to any podcast or YouTube video where the book author has been interviewed. In my case, I am currently reading True Believer: Thoughts and the Nature of Mass Movements by Hoffer Eric because I heard about him on a podcast.
I teach from what I read. This strengthens my brain
I look for people who are living examples of what I read. For example, I will interview the YouTuber with 450,000 subscribers Fisayo Fosudo on my podcast next week. It took him 4 years to hit 100,000 subscribers in 2021 but in two years he grew by 400% making it 470,000 subscribers. This is a clear example of what I read from Charlie Munger " Never disrupt anything that is compounding unnecessarily"
