We now live in the knowledge economy, what that means is that your ability to earn and progress economically is directly tied to how efficient your skill is, the economic value of your skill, your skills ability to solve meaningful problems, and the toughness to replace you.
WHAT IS A SKILL
According to the Cambridge dictionary, a skill is “ an ability to do an activity or job well especially because you have practiced it” I like the phrase ‘ESPECIALLY BECAUSE YOU HAVE PRACTICED IT’’
It doesn’t have economic value if you HAVEN’T PRACTICED IT. People play soccer every morning in neighborhoods around the world but not all of them earn 900,000 Pounds a week playing soccer like Cristiano Ronaldo
HOW TO MASTER YOUR SKILL
Thank God that skill mastery is not limited to sports, music, or art. Business is a skill, your job is a skill, sales is a skill, etc. And all skills are learnable because our brains are malleable and adaptable to change.
WHY YOU SHOULD MASTER YOUR SKILL AND DOMINATE YOUR CRAFT
Why do the rich get richer, and the poor poorer? How come most of the opportunities in most industries gravitate to the known names in those industries? This can be explained by a concept called
‘THE MATTHEW EFFECT’ coined by The term was coined by sociologist Robert k. Merton in 1968, and it basically means that in every field the best opportunities go to the very best, popular, and successful in those fields.
Jesus said in Matthew 25: 29 “For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away”
So there you have it, the reason why you should master your craft to world-class (Notice I didn’t say ‘local excellence’ because your competition is global) excellence is to that the big deals and opportunities come to you.
HOW TO MASTER YOUR CRAFT
1. CLEAR GOALS: Set very clear goals on the level of mastery you want to attain or what you want to specifically improve
2. DEEP WORK FOCUS: Focus deeply on the work, distraction is your enemy here. When you focus on the task at hand and do it repeatedly you activate an activity in your brain called MYELIN.
Now, it’s the neurons in your brain that carry out information, when you’re deeply focusing on a task or skill MYELINATION is the process whereby fatty tissues are wrapped around the neurons responsible for that activity so that the skill travels quickly and easily without distraction. It basically insulates the neurons in your brain so that it doesn’t leak out, just like in insulating electricity with rubber insulation so that it can do its job
3. FEEDBACK: As you’re doing the work in a deep focus mood you need feedback to see how you’re doing. This is where you need a coach, mentor, or manager to objectively tell you areas of improvement.
4. VISUALIZE: Mentally see yourself doing the skill over and over again in your mind, this is powerful because your mind cannot tell the difference between an imagined experience or a real one. This is the reason why I visualize my speeches before I give them. 5. ROLE PLAY: When I coach or speak to my clients on sales I always insist on role play or rehearsal because that is one of the best ways to hone your craft
