My inspiration for this article came from 100-year-old billionaire Charlie Munger ( Who died in December 2023), who introduced me to the concept of Inversion Thinking—or what I call Reverse Thinking.
Charlie Munger suggests turning a problem to focus on what to avoid or what could lead to failure. For instance, instead of asking, "What should I do to be successful in this business?" Munger would advise asking, "What could lead to failure in this business?"
Then do the OPPOSITE
Now that you understand the concept, here are 14 ways to fail in sales:
Get leads but don’t follow up. I followed up on GT Bank for one year before they gave me a sales training.
Consume knowledge but take no action. Learning isn’t just about collecting information; it's about changing behavior.
Ignore your numbers. For example, what’s your sales conversion rate? If you reach out to 100 prospects and convert 10, you have a 10% closing rate. Tracking this tells you what you need to do to improve.
Wait for clients to come to you. Attack is the new defense.
Neglect content distribution. You may create great content, but distributing it widely is just as essential.
Forget to check emails and DMs. I recently closed a sales training with KORA PAY, a major fintech, because I happened to check a lesser-used email account where they’d sent an inquiry. One missed email could mean a missed opportunity.

Fail to write and review sales goals daily.
