How to be CONSISTENT- 4 Ways to finish what you start- Even if you're a procrastinator or lazy
In the fast-paced world of 2024, the struggle to stay consistent in our pursuits remains an ever-present challenge. Whether it's health, wealth, relationships, or professional endeavors, many of us encounter that familiar hurdle around the 20-day mark. Can you relate? As we navigate the first half of this transformative year, the stakes are higher than ever, and inconsistency could be costing you more than you realize.
Before we delve into conquering this challenge, let's address a prevalent limiting belief surrounding consistency: the idea that one must be in the right mood to remain steadfast. As William Faulkner once responded when asked about his writing routine, "I write only when I'm inspired. Fortunately, it strikes at 9 AM sharp every morning." This mindset shift is crucial – consistency can be scheduled; it's not something we wait or wish for.
The 4 Ways to Master Consistency in 2024:
1. Label Yourself:
· Take a moment to identify the aspect of your life or business that demands consistency – be it in sales, health, relationships, or social engagements. Once defined, embrace that label. For instance, having authored 281 articles for THE FOH LETTERS newsletter, I proudly call myself a writer. This self-identification compels me to behave consistently with what that label stands for. Writers write; fit individuals engage in healthy habits. We become what we repeatedly do. Everytime i write i feel congruent and consistent with my identity.
2. Start with Baby Steps:
· Kickstart your journey by taking the smallest, most manageable steps toward your goal. Instead of committing to a 30-minute workout, initiate with 5 minutes. If your aim is 10 sales calls a day, begin with 5. Consistency with these smaller steps initiates momentum, propelling you naturally to elevate your efforts. The key is to start small and grow gradually. Take action. Action produces information. Entrepreneurs are like sharks when they stop swimming they die. Whatever the economy is saying don’t stop taking action so that when the tide turns you will have unfair advantage. It’s biting all of us now, but we MOVE. 3 Tell People:
· Declare your chosen label proudly. Share it with your colleagues, friends, and family. Announce to the world that you're a writer, a fitness enthusiast, a salesperson, or whatever identity aligns with your goals. This public commitment not only solidifies your dedication but enlists the support of those around you. Humans have a natural tendency to stay consistent with the image they project. By pretending to be what you aspire to become, you may find yourself naturally evolving into that very identity.
4. Reward It:
· Celebrate your consistency victories by gifting yourself a reward after a certain period. Whether it's a small indulgence or a meaningful treat, recognizing your efforts reinforces the positive behavior loop. Rewarding yourself becomes a powerful motivator, making consistency an even more gratifying journey.
5. Consequences: I live both the UK and Lagos, I've observed a distinct behavioral pattern influenced by the presence of consequences. It's not about one group being inherently better than the other; rather, it's the immediate repercussions for actions that shape behavior. For instance, in the UK, adherence to rules is reinforced by the tangible consequences that follow transgressions. Breaking traffic rules may result in a ticket, and parking on a yellow line can lead to a parking ticket. The fear of facing these consequences motivates individuals to behave responsibly.
Consider applying a similar principle to your own life. If you're looking to modify your behavior, introduce consequences for not meeting your sales targets. This could be as straightforward as setting personal penalties for falling short. By instilling a sense of accountability, the fear of facing these consequences may serve as a powerful catalyst for positive behavioral change.
Remember, where there is no consequence, there is often no impetus for change. Embrace accountability, set clear consequences, and watch as your behaviors align more closely with your desired outcomes.
By applying these strategies, not only can you conquer the challenges of consistency in 2024, but you can also lay the foundation for forming good habits that will serve you well in the long run. The journey to consistency is an investment in yourself, your goals, and the success you envision.
Here's to a year of unwavering consistency, habit formation, and the rich rewards that follow!
