CHOICES = DESTINY
Epictetus says that “if your choices are beautiful, so too will you be.” Lately, i have been geeking over and generally thinking about the words: ‘Choices’ and ‘Decisions’
We make our choices and the consequences of our choices make us. Last night as I lay on my bed to sleep by 9 PM, I was very tired and ready to have a good night rest, when I realized that I had not brushed my teeth everything in my body told me not to stand up from my bed, I conjured all kinds of story in my head to justify my laziness.
But at last, my decision-making technique won the mental civil war in my head.
POSITIVE ASYMMETRY
Asymmetry: “lack of equality or equivalence between parts or aspects of something; lack of symmetry” Google
In making any decision whether it is brushing your teeth at night before you go to bed or picking up the phone and calling a client, you want to look at the cost or trade-off of the decision and the benefit or long term benefits of the decision.
Usually, the cost is little( Relative to the upside) but the potential benefits are enormous. that is why I call it positive asymmetry.
Where there is a lack of quality between your decisional cost and the upside of the decision. When the cost is small but the upside is large, that creates a POSITIVE ASYMMETRY
COST: Get out of my cozy bed, tucked in my duvet, and clad in my favorite pajamas
POTENTIAL BENEFIT: A strong teeth and dental situation in my older years am already past 40 years of age.
COST: Picking up the phone to call a potential customer, or posting about your product on Instagram
POTENTIAL BENEFIT: Closing a big sale or in my case getting a speaking engagement to speak at a real estate conference in Dubai in the last quarter of 2021 because of my daily Instagram videos
So, in making decisions what you should be looking for cost or ‘inconveniences’ that offer large and sometimes unlimited upside or opportunities
